Definitions

  • w/ = with
  • l = left hand
  • r = right hand
  • b = both hands

Setup

When the satsuubako is held perpendicular to the body, the received ocha faces inwards and the teishu's faces away. The received ocha is in a chaire, the teishu's is in a chuu-natsume. Satsuubako is centered on tana.

Both the okeiko opening and chaji opening have slightly different setups. See below for more information.

Opening

Okeiko

Only the mizusashi is out (no other dougu in yet).

  • Enter with satsuubako and place it at the foot of the tana w/b.
  • Open box to left w/b. Lift out chaire and place it to the immediate right (centered), handling it.
  • With r, lift out natsume (thumb at 9 and fingers on opposite) and in one handling motion, place it back into the satsuubako, in the center, with the ears towards and tail away (it will have gone through a 180 degree rotation).
  • Close satsuubako w/b and and replace on top of tana w/b.
  • Move chaire to center. Leave.
  • Bow with chawan and continue as normal koicha...

Chaji

The chaire displayed at the end of shouzumi will be put into the satsuubako and the satsuubako will be closed and on top of the tana when the guests reenter.

  • Bow with chawan.
  • Enter and place chawan to left w/l.
  • With both hands, satsuubako down.
  • W/r, move chaire to normal koicha opening position and w/lrl chawan to normal opening position. Continue as normal koicha from this point...

Body

  • Proceed with normal koicha body...
  • After jikyaku drinks one sip shokyaku asks about name of tea. Respond: "Itadaita ocha de gozaimasu"/"Torai no ocha de gozaimasu". Conversation and such.
  • Close kama. After tsume drinks, open kama (including chakin move).
  • After shokyaku passes chawan to jikyaku for haiken, shokyaku says “Goyoi no ocha (o) itadakimasu”.
  • After acknowledging the guest's request, chakin shibori.
  • Rotate to center of tana.
  • Takes satsuubako w/b and move to naname position, rotate satsuubako 90 degrees counterclockwise and place in front of knees.
  • Open w/b, placing the lid on the near side of the satsuubako and leaning it on the side of the satsuubako, between satsuubako and knees.
  • Lift out the natsume, handling, and place it on the far side of the satsuubako, near robuchi.
  • W/b close the satsuubako, lift, rotate it 90 degress clockwise and place back on of tana. Return to naname.
  • W/r, take natsume and bring it a little closer in, the usual distance.
  • Take natsume out of shifuku (see: Natsume for Koicha), clean natsume (placing 2nd shifuku nestled on top of 1st) and clean natsume; place natsume to left of tana (ala tsuzuki usucha), put fukusa away, and perform tsutzuki exchange of chaire and natsume.
  • Retrieve the recently returned chawan and dashibukusa; rinse twice (second time w/chakin), and make standard koicha...
  • About when the second guest starts drinking, the shoukyaku will ask about the tea and to see the chaire and shifuku from the first set. Oblige.
  • Rotate to center, take chaire w/r and do standard cleaning and placement (e.g. go to perpendicular).
  • Return to naname, w/r retrieve both shifuku and place them in l, take the top one and return it to tana (btw, if there is not a drawer, they go close center-left on top of tana), and place in standard motion.
  • Shokyaku will get chaire and shifuku and return to place; tsume returns chawan and dashibukusa.
  • Retrieve chawan and dashibukusa ans proceed in standard way to koicha closing...

Closing

  • Continue closing in standard way...
  • After closing mizusashi, shokyaku asks to see chaki, chashaku, shifuku and satsuubako. Acknowledge; oblige.
  • Start placement in the standard way, but place the dougu in a slightly more compact layout, to make room for the additional satsuubako.
  • After the shifuku is placed, rotate to center, w/b take satsuubako, rotate to perpendicular, rotate the satsuubako counterclockwise, and w/b place the satsuubako centered on the bottom of the shifuku.
  • Rotate back to center, do what the tana dictates (hishaku, futaoki, etc.), and take stuff to mizuya.
  • After adding water to the mizusashi and before closing the door, make an extra trip in to retrieve and discuss the first set's dougu.
  • Enter, place chaki on tana (when necessary (always necessary?)), rotate to perpendicular, and discuss.
  • W/b, move satsuubako to the inside of heri (tatami line), centered between the knees.
  • W/b open lid to r, place natsume inside (center), handling. Close satsuubako.
  • Handling, place chashaku on top (upper-left/lower-right naname). Place shifuku on top completely centered, and out w/b.
  • Bow out without disassembling stack.

Guests

Be aware that other guests may be still be in haiken (and maybe even drinking) when certain commands are given.

  • Standard koicha until jikyaku has started chawan haiken, then state "Goyoi no ocho (o) itadakimasu"--this will set the host into a satisfying flurry of action.
  • When jikyaku starts drinking for the second round of koicha, ask to see the chaire and shifuku.
  • When shokyaku takes chaki, chashaku, shifuku and satsuubako he/she places satsuubako in front of knees, opens satsuubako w/b placing lid to left side, place chaki in center of sb, close lid, place chashaku on an angle on top (upper left/lower right) of satsuubako and shifuku on top of chashaku.
  • Shokyaku returns to his/her seat, places satsuubako in front of right knee outside of heri. Adjust.
  • Shifuku to the left of satsuubako and chashaku to left of shifuku. Opens satsuubako lid w/b and places lid on right side of sb, takes out chaki and places to left of chashaku, replaces satsuubako lid w/b.
  • TODO: Image here.
  • After haiken, tsume assembles dougu as teishu did when taking to seat (except the lid will be on the right), and goes out to deai.
  • When seated in front of shokyaku, tsume places satsuubako in front of left knee, places shifuku to right of sb, chashaku to right of shifuku, and then opens lid of satsuubako w/b placing lid on left side of sb, removes chaki and places to right of chashaku and replaces lid on sb. Tsume places dogu in front of shokyaku and returns to seat. After shokyaku has inspected dogu, moved all slightly closer to temaeza, shokyaku rotates all dogu (including sb) and replaces into earlier position.

Additional Notes/Issues

  • During haiken, male guests can handle the satsuubako halves with one hand.
  • When the satsuubako lid is opened it is to the right, left, or bottom.
    • Bottom occurs once, when the teishu gets the second chaire from the box.
    • Left occurs twice, once during the preparation before the guests are in the room and once when the tsume breaks down the stack to return to the shoukyaku during deai.
    • Right the rest of the time.
  • Unless otherwise indicated (are there any such indications?), the satsuubako is initially rotated clockwise.

Chizuko's mom's version

There is a not for when the shokyaku returns after fetching the dougu but doesn't have much room:

  • The satsuubako is placed directly in front of the guest
  • The shifuku goes to the immediate right
  • The chashaku to the immediate left
  • The lid to the right of the shifuku
  • The chaire to the left of the chashaku
  • Lid back on
  • Reorder as necessary
